You can fly into Malaga on the
Costa del Sol from at least half a dozen UK airports. But after you've

to go far. Less than an hour up the motorway, you can turn off at Antequera.
In this dignified and busy little town, with its baroque churches, Moorish
fountains and bullring, the wide marble pavements of the orange tree shaded
streets are kept clean by sweepers wielding old-fashioned witches' brooms.
Crippled lottery ticket-sellers ply their trade from green wooden booths,
and the clothes shops sell demure white first-communion dresses.
Antequera
is the gateway to a gently undulating land of red-roofed, white- walled
villages, such as Villanueva del Rosario,
where the housewives mop the spotless streets every day. There are almond
trees, empty roads, herds of goats - and the fields are still ploughed
with mule-power. In every direction you see olive groves, countless acres
covering the red and ochre earth from the plains to the heights. (extract
