Practice
Kimi Räikkönen
(1:33.527) was the dominant driver in the first session by 0.5s margin
but at the end of the 90 minute second session, being pushed all the way
by Lewis Hamilton (1:33.540) the margin was down to 0.013s. the British
driver with 13 minutes left to go changed to a soft compound to put in
his fast lap, with the Finn doing likewise 4 minutes later The Ferraris
and McLaren´s traded positions, the Italians having been quite during
the first 30 minutes A strong late effort gave third fastest time
to Robert Kubica (1m33.772s) ahead of Felipe Massa (1m33.772s) and Fernado
Alonso (1m33.784s). Alexander Wurz (1:33.973) was sixth fastest with
Nick Heidfeld (1:34.076) sandwiched between the other Williams of Nico
Rosberg (1:34.189). Improving on their morning time Red Bull had
David Coulthard (1:34.359) ninth and Mark Webber 14th with Jarno Trulli
(1:34.366) making it the top ten drivers today. Jenson Button's RA107
suffered an apparent engine failure and the subsequent oil patch, throwing
Massa into a spin 60 minutes into the session put him at the bottom of
the time sheets, but Rubens Barichello´s car in 11th place gave the
team hope for this weekend. |

Change - drops 10 places on the grid
Felipe Massa
and Lewis Hamilton a week on from their duel in Malaysia, the duo waged
a private battle at the top of the timesheet throughout the three segments
of qualifying to leave their more experienced team-mates to battle for
the second row. Whilst Massa took pole people are voting for Hamilton
to win. The gaps to both of their respective team-mates suggest that Räikkönen
and Alonso may have qualified with slightly heavier fuel loads. The
BMW´s continued their strong showing with 5th and 6th places on the
grid, Heidfeld still to getting the better of his young team-mate Robert
Kubica. Drawing a lot of attention in qualifying was Anthony Davidson´s
Super Aguri Honda outqualify team-mate Takuma Sato for the first time and
just missed out on getting in amongst the big boys in the final session
by a mere 0.2s. Rubens Barrichello outqualify Jenson Button for the
first time in 2007., but fellow Brit David Coulthard´s RB3 stopped
out on circuit in final practice, was unable to complete more than four
laps in the first session after his RB3 suffered a gearbox-related problem.
Lewis was third in Australia, second in Malaysia and the question is can
he win here tomorrow? |

The pressure
today was on Felipe Massa and today he made the statement that he is a
serious contender for the 2007 Championship driving a faultless race putting
the bad luck at Australia and his mistake last weekend in Malaysia behind
him and took a well deserved third Grand Prix win here. (He talks
to Michael Schumacher before and after each race). He was pushed
all the way by Hamilton. At the start the Ferrari driver was into
the first corner ahead of Hamilton, with Fernando Alonso overtaking Kimi
Räikkönen, with Jenson Button out at the first corner.
The safety car came out whilst the debris was cleared away, but Kimi Räikkönen
was caught napping. It was evident that Fernando was not on pace
and was holding up the Finn, but in the first pit stop he managed to leap
frog the Spaniard and the strong showing by BMW's Nick Heidfeld was reinforced
this afternoon when the German made a superb overtaking maneuver on Fernando
to take fourth position which he was to hold until the end of the race.
Making is presence felt was DC who starting from the back of the grid moved
up into the points, overtaking his team mate Mark Webber, but luck struck
a cruel blow when after the second pit stop the right drive shaft went
and the Red Bull was out. Mark Webber then inherited a points position
only to suffer a retirement. The McLaren´s came in after the
Ferraris, who were quicker in a straight line, and put on their mandatory
hard compound. Lewis Hamilton then proceeded to pull in Felipe Massa
and it did look as if Fernando Alonso could snatch his fourth place back
from Nick Heidfeld but did not. Giancarlo Fiscihella was urged to
overtake Jarno Trulli, the Italian having been dismissed by Renault in
2004., but he managed to stay ahead and take 2 more points. This
now leaves 3 drivers heading the points table, a good race and a good championship
and it cannot be long before Lewis Hamilton wins his first Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso will obviously be hoping to make amends at his home Grand
Prix at Montmelo (Barcelona). Felipe Massa was definitely "Driver
of the Day" but had David Coulthard finished it could well have been him
and it must be a moral booster to him that the public made him their "Driver
of the Day". |
