Change - drops 10 places on the grid
Michael Schumacher
looked to be the man to beat this weekend but it was Fernando Alonso who
seized pole position, his first of the season, when the Michael lost a
little time on the middle sector on his best lap. Prooving that Ferrari
is on form and on the second row of the grid is Felipe Massa with fellow
South American Rubens Barrichello, outqualifying team mate Jenson Button
for the first time this session and one row behind with Kimi Raikkonen
between the two Honda´s. Jarno Trulli was seventh for Toyota
ahead of a good performance from Jacques Villeneuve, who was the object
of some words from Giancarlo Fisichella between the second and third qualifying
sessions, the Italian having been held up by the Canadian. (blocking him
and ruining his fastest lap by 0.7s (according to Renault's telemetry).
Only the first three drivers set faster times in the last qualify session,
their second session times being faster. Fernando Alonso probably
needs this pole position on this particular circuit as their could be a
first corner incident tomorrow! Franck
Montagny has taken Ide´s seat in the Super Aguri Honda this weekend,
the Japanese having been penalised for the incident with Christijan Albers
at Imola tow weeks ago. |

Lap: Michael Schumacher 1:32.099 (lap 39)
Michael Schumacher
was the clear victor of the European Grand Prix, strategy in the Ferrari
pit paying off for the second GP in a row, on the second time around when
Renault came in (lap 38) first and the Ferrari stayed out for more laps
more setting some scorching times (including fasted lap) allowing Michael
to reverse postions on Fernando with ease. The start was relatively
incident free, only Liuzzi having a coming together with David Coulthard
which saw the retirement of both drivers. Luizza (lap 1) Coulthard
(lap 2) after trying to rejoin. Alonso took the lead from pole position
and kept the position until the second pit stop, but was shadowed by the
two Ferrari´s of Schumacher on Massa. Barichello made a bad
start and Jenson Button moved ahead of him until he retired. Kimi
Raikkonen who had started the race with more fuel than those ahead of him
was always in contention for third place eventually settleing for fourth
place and Nico Rosberg put in another stellar performance from have started
at the back finished seventh, with Giancarlo Fishichella sixth, having
managed to reverse tables on Jacques Villeneuve during the second round
of pit stops, the Canadian appearing to be holding the Italian up, there
being no love lost between these two drivers this weekend, Villenueve having
been moved back one place on the grid for yesterday´s incident.
Villenueve scored the final point. The were late retirements of both
Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher.
