Michael Schumacher claimed pole position with Felipe Massa just 0.017s slower than his team mate, making it a Ferrari front row for tomorrows race. Fernando Alonso couldn't match the Ferrari's pace through the first sector of the lap possibly due to the high track temperature 53 degrees C which seemed to favouring the Bridgestone shod cars.  Giancarlo Fischichella looked like making it an all Renault second row, but at the last minute Jarno Trulli, looking strong throughout qualifying, took his place and the other Toyota of Ralf Schumacher pushed him out of fifth place and Kimi Raikkonen snatching sixth from him.  Pedro Martinez de la Rosa was ahead of Kimi Raikkonen for most of the last session, but a locking front and traffic pushed him back to eight fastest,  Jenson Button this afternoon was not a happy man, only qualifying 19th his team mate Rubens Barichello 14th.

Ferrari brought a new package to Mangy-Cours and Michael Schumacher dominated the race from start to finish.  Felipe Massa backed up his team mate brilliantly, holding Fernando Alonso in the first lap, the Spaniard deciding not to risk it and a possible tangling with Jarno Trulli.  Renault decided to change tactics from a 3 stopper to a 2 stop and were rewarded with damage limitation, Fernando managing to reverse with Felipe.  Mark Webber Williams was in trouble with a badly worn rear tyre and eventually called it a day.  Was it the tyre or was it the chassis? the question being asked by other Bridgestone shod teams.  Jarno Trulli., looking strong throughout the day eventually had to retire and Pedro Martinez de la Rosa drove a great race and had he had a better start (dropping one place and visually being held up by Mark Webber) might have been further up and even challenging Kimi Raikkonen.  Michael Schumacher was the driver of the day and it remains to be seen if the new package being bought to the German Grand Prix can reverse the Renaults fortunes against the Italian team
