2nd
Practice (Friday afternoon)
Kimi Raikkonen
and Felipe Massa ensured Ferrari made the perfect start to its home grand
prix weekend were first and second in the first practice session this morning
with only Hamilton getting close to the two red cars. Fernando
Alonso (1m22.386s) dominated the second free practice session this afternoon
ahead of team mate Lewis Hamilton (1m23.209s) lapping 0.8s faster.
On home turf Giancarlo Fisichella (1m23.584s) put his Renault third fastest
despite leaving an alarming trail of black brake dust in his wake whenever
he braked fiercely. Robert Kubica (1m23.599s) on the podium here
last year, was fourth fastest for BMW ahead of the consistent Nico Rosberg
(1m23.679s) and Felipe Massa (1m23.722s) tested out the new run-off at
the Variante della Roggia, coming of the track at least three times - even
managed a spin at the same chicane, forcing Alonso to take avoiding action.
Nick Heidfeld (1m23.821s) was seventh in the second BMW , Kimi Raikkonen
(1m23.833s), spent most this session in the pits with a hydraulic problem.
Heikki Kovalainen (1m23.848s) and Alex Wurz (1m23.881s) filled out the
top ten. |

Change - drops 10 places on the grid
This afternoon
Fernando Alonso was dominate in Q1 Q2 and most importantly in Q3 to take
pole position his second this season, the last one being at Monte Carlo.
He second flying lap looked as it would be faster, but he eased off when
the pits signaled that Lewis Hamilton had not managed to snatch pole from
him, which is a pity as we shall never know what he was capable of, but
we do know from the on board camera that he was awesome through the Parabolica
(reminds me of my FF1600 days around Estoril`s Parabolica!). Hamilton
being less happy with the balance of his MP4-22 managed to make it an all
McLaren Mercedes front row, just 0.037s. Felipe Massa struggled with
his under steering F2007 more than half a second adrift of the pole time
and more worryingly for Ferrari is the fact the Nick Heidfeld slotted his
BMW in front of Kimi Räikkönen,
the Finn in the spare, having had a high speed massive crash this morning,
the chassis that he has had his two wins in. Robert Kubica put the
other BMW behind with Heikki Kovalainen being the faster of the two Renault
drivers, Giancarlo Fisichella complaining that Rubens Barichello´s
"off" had kept him out of the top ten. Nico Rosberg qualified strongly
to sit alongside his old GP2 rival with Jarno Trulli on row five with a
delighted Jenson Button putting his Honda in the top ten and hoping to
score points tomorrow. |

Fernando Alonso
cut Lewis Hamilton´s lead to three points this afternoon driving
superbly to lead from pole to the chequered flag. For his part
Hamilton made
up for a bad start, overtaking Massa, who had overtaken him, going into
the first corner, having given the Brazilian very little room as he moved
to the left, causing Felipe to ride the white line, and so close was it
into the chicane that Felipe was forced to touch Lewis sending the rookie
onto the green area. It would have been possible to maybe attack
Fernando as a result, but would sure to attract the steward's attention,
so he tucked in behind the Spaniard who gradually pulled away until the
safety car came out after David Coulthard´s high speed crash - Not
DC´s weekend with the gearbox problems yesterday!. Pressure
was taken off Lewis Hamilton when Felipe Massa came in for an unexpected
pit stop, went out again for just one lap before "calling it a day" - Something
to do with the rear end and unfortunately taking the Brazilian's contention
for the World Championship. The best battle meanwhile was between
Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg. The two McLaren´s made their
first stops, Lewis obviously having a lighter fuel load, coming in first
with Fernando a couple of laps later, Fernando managing to retain his lead.
Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari played their ace and went for a one stop strategy,
the Finn managing to come out in front of Lewis. Kimi must have been
very surprised to see a silver car out brake him into the first chicane
from 50 metres behind and overtake him. After that it really was
a question of keeping the engines in good shape for Spa next weekend.
The two McLaren drivers and Ron Dennis must be very pleased to have finished
first and second at Ferrari's Monza. Are Ferrari trying to win the
Championship of the circuit must be asked? At first it was just one
Italian employee, then one McLaren employee. Hopefully the matter
will be settled once and for all next thursday.
Come on
Ferrari - do you remember when you ordered Rubens Barichello to let Michael
Schumacher overtake in Austria?
