Change - drops 10 places on the grid
It is thought
that the two contenders for the 2007 World Championship will be Fernando
Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen but Felipe Massa who has dominated
so far this weekend showed in qualifying that he should not be ruled out
of the equation, snatching pole position from Fernando Alonso in the final
seconds of Q3., the Spaniard, having just snatched pole from Räikkönen
a few seconds before, and had dominated Q3 from the start. Lewis
Hamilton came a credible 4th having admitted after qualifying that his
inexperience had probably been the cause of his slowing slightly when rain
drops came down on his visor. The BMW`s of Robert Kubica and Nick
Heidfeld in fifth and seventh with Rosberg splitting them ahead of the
two Toyotas of Trulli and Schumacher with Mark Webber making the top ten.
Jenson Button comfortably got himself into Q2 despite both Honda drivers
complaints about the handling of the Honda and it thought that a new long
wheel base chassis will be appear for the second half of the season.
The Honda second team Super Aguri´s Takuma Sato put his car ahead
of both of first team and Anthony Davidson in the Super Aguri and Anthony
Davidson that he was held up by the Toro Rosso of Tonio Liuzzi and reckoned
that he could have been higher up the grid if this had not happened in
a televised interview. A gearbox problem on Alex Wurz's Williams
meant he was unable to extract the true potential of the FW29 to the same
extent as his team mate. The Bridgestone soft compound will feature
a white insert in the centre of the tyre which will assist spectators and
tv viewers alike as to which compound is being used by the teams and drivers.

Fernando Alonso
scored his first win for McLaren sooner than he had anticipated, using
his quick start that he had developed at Renault to his advantage, and
overtaking Felipe Massa into the first corner, who intent on the McLaren
in front of him, obviously did not see the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton follow
Fernando´s line, squeezing through on the inside line and overtaking
both Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa. Like a veteran he held the
Brazilian and the Finn behind him allowing Fernando to open up a lead.
He was tricking Felipe in to outbraking into Turn 4 and on lap 5 the tactic
work, Felipe outbraking himself and going on the grass after which he never
recovered and could not get past Nick Heidfeld. Ron Dennis had anxious
moments when it was time for Fernando Alonso to come into the pits, the
Spaniards radio not working, but Fernando came in, and as he said in the
debriefing, wondering whether the pit crew would be there to greet him.
A few adjustments in the pit resolved this problem. Lewis Hamilton
seemed to go off pace after his second pit stop and it was being asked,
as Kimi Raikkonen relentlessly started to haul him in, was it physical
or was it that he did not like the softer compound (it being obligatory
to use both sets during a race). Nico Rosberg drove a brilliant race
until he ground to a halt with just 13 laps to go, the victim of a mechanical
failure. Lewis Hamilton meanwhile was managing to keep Kimi Raikkonen
behind him, his lead being less with every lap, but the Rookie drove a
"mature" race and took the flag ahead of Kimi giving McLaren a one two
their first since 2005. Giancarlo Fisichella finished a distant sixth
ahead of fellow Italian Jarno Trulli and his team mate Heikki Kovalainen
who had had an off. Lewis Hamilton played a great team role in allowing
Fernando Alonso to open up a lead on the two Ferraris and must be considered
as the "Driver of the Day" for this an defending his position against
Kimi after the second pit stop. Might it have been different had
the Finn not been held up by Fischichella after this? But that is
racing! |
