Practice
This morning
it was Kimi Raikkonen the fastest but this afternoon it was Lewis Hamilton
(1m28.469s) reproduced the same form as the Finn, Kimi Raikkonen (1m28.762s)
having to settle for second fastest. The impressive Toyotas of Ralf
Schumacher (1m28.773s) and Jarno Trulli (1m28.874s) in third and fourth,
with the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa (1m28.884s) fifth fastest and Fernando
Alonso (1m28.947s). Nico Rosberg (1m28.995s) Heikki Kovalainen (1m29.025s),
Alex Wurz (1m29.093s), and Robert Kubica (1m29.368s) completed the top
ten fastest the session having had to be stopped less than 30 minutes into
it when Giancarlo Fisichella's Renault dislodged a drain cover. The
other incident - Anthony Davidson spearing into the barriers at Turn 3
in the closing stages. The track was dusty so too many conclusions
should not be drawn from either session. Leave that until tomorrow! |

Change - drops 10 places on the grid
Felipe Massa
in the last seconds of Q3 snatched pole position from Lewis Hamilton, the
Brazilian having set the pace in the first phase of Q3 flying laps until
the Championship leader managed to get his act together and have a 0.6s
advantage over Felipe, Lewis having asked his pits where he was going wrong.
Kimi Raikkonen, the favourite, was a further two tenths back from his pole
man team mate after making a mistake towards the end of his final lap,
crossing up at the penultimate corner and Fernando Alonso having been the
fastest in both Q2 and Q1 could only manage fourth fastest, possibly have
elected to run on the hard compound, whilst the three in front ran the
soft. The BMW drivers took the third row, with Kubica in front of
Heidfeld today by 0.3s. Heikki Kovalainen put his Renault in front
of his team mate Giancarlo Fisichella with fellow Italian Jarno Trulli
the filling between the two French cars, the promising showing of Ralf
Schumacher not materialising this afternoon the German finishing 18th.
Anthony Davidson drove very well and nearly made it to the top ten, but
was demoted first by Jarno Trulli and then Giancarlo Fisichella in Q2 having
been 0.6s faster than Takumo Sato in Q1 |

Felipe Massa
was rightly voted "driver of the day" after leading from start to finish
and making it his second Turkish Grand Prix win in a row. Kimi Raikkonen
kept in second place throughout, closing on the Brazilian, but never looking
a threat, although he did put in the fastest lap towards the end to "make
a point". Lewis Hamilton held third place, but never seemed in a
position to overtake either of the Ferrari's who had started on the soft
compound, only changing this after the second pit stop. This with
the higher down force possibly gave them the advantage over the McLaren´s.
Fernando Alonso, like Hamilton, on hard tyres and on the dirty side, lost
two places at the start to the two BMW's and for 17 laps had to look at
the rear wing of Nick Heidfeld, a frequent view for him this year. Kubica
came into the pits on lap 13 and he managed to leapfrog the other BMW of
Heidfeld at the first pit stop holding fourth place until with just 15
laps to go Hamilton´s right front went elevating Alonso to third
and a podium finish, narrowing the gap down to just points with just
5 races remaining. Michael Schumacher was 21 points down (I think)
before last years Turkish Grand Prix so the Championship is not over with
Ferrari instructing their drivers to have one/two finishes for the remaining
races. Lewis Hamilton held on to sixth place with a badly handling
car (only they blown tyre being changed) just holding of the ever improving
Kovalainen who had even briefly led the race in the first stint just prior
to his first stop. The only incident was Giancarlo Fisichella touching Jarno Trulli and causing his fellow Italian to spin his Toyota from which he was not to recover at the first corner on the first lap. Mark Webber was the only retirement.
