In the
early years, in common with other parts of Europe, there were battles with
there being Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians being overthrown.
In BC 205
peace came to the area with
the Romans managing to rule for two centuries in Lisboa and the city became
the most important city in the west of Iberia and Julius Ceasar renamed
it
Felicitas Julia.
In AD 714 the Moors conquered
the city, fortified it, and held onto it for a further 400 years against
Christian attacks until it was retaken in 1147. It took another century
before to
Christians could drive the
Moors from Portuguese territory. By the mid 13th century Lisboa replaced
Coimbra as Portugal's capital city and it then developed very rapidly due
to
it's position with both
maritime and inland trade.
The 15th century saw the
Portuguese navigate the oceans. Prince Henrique decided to circumvate
the Moors economic supremacy by finding a sea route past it.
he put the best in the shipping
industry together, boat builders, sailors and astronomers and in 1434 one
of the ships sailed beyond Cape Bojador on the West African coast and at
the time thought to be "the
end of the world". His reward gold and slaves from West Africa.
Vasco de Gama in 1497 discovered the route to India and the returning laden
ships
transformed Lisboa into
the center of a wealthy country. The money was spent in building
extravagant Manueline architectural style building, possible the best known
example
being the Mosasteiro dos
Jerónimos in Belém.
However the wealthy era was
short lived, the cost of financing the expeditions, trying to Christianize
Morocco bought the nascent economy down. In 1580 Filipe 11 of Spain
claimed
the Portuguese crown and
it took until 1640 until the Nationalists overthrew the Spanish.
With the discovery of gold in Brazil, by the late 17th century Lisboa prospered
again, but a
massive earthquake in 1755
reduced the city to rubble and it never really recovered from this
The next foreigner to occupy
the city was Napoleon for 4 years from 1807. After he was driven
from the Iberian peninsular, the city like the rest of the country fell
into political intrigue
and the resulting chaos
and their was a military insurrection for over a century. This was
to return in the early 20th century when over a 16 year period there were
45 changes of government.
A coup in 1926 brought Oliveira
Salazar to power, a man that had quickly risen form finance minister to
prime minister. He ruled for 36 years with an iron fist finally being
toppled in 1976.
His regime was authoritarian,
banning political parties and strikes. There was censorship propaganda
and secret police kept his rule secure.
The unpopular military suppression
of Portugal caused the people to revolt in 1974 and 3 years before their
neighbor they saw their country return to democracy and in 1986 the joined
the European Union.
This gave it the much needed injection of funds and from then on the country
began to shake of the depressed Salazar era look and lifestyle. Now
the city is thriving
with a strong economy and
infrastructure. Lisboa is a vibrant city and has hosted a World trade
fair and is about to host the 2004 European Soccer Championship
