Historically, Torremolinos is one of the best known tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol.  The Tourist boom of the 50's,which made the Malaga coast and its pleasant climate world famous, started here, and it has since spread to create what is today one of Spain's finest tourist resort areas, the Costa del Sol.  Since the Stone Age, early civilizations have settled here, numerous remains of which have been found in its caves and grottos. Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs have allpassed through, finding here all that could be desired in those times:  shelter, water, fishing, hunting and an exceptional climate.  The most notable legacy of the Arab period is the watchtower that stands at the end of the famous 'Calle San Miguel', referred to in a 1497 decree as "Torre de los Molinos" and which has given its name to the town.  It is know today as Torre de Pimintel.

The many mills, mostly flour, which operated for many years, are part of the history and the name of Torremolinos (the spanish word molino meaning mill in english).  Some are still standing, such as the Molino del Rosario (next to Pimintel) or the Molino de Inca (near the springs), currently being rebuilt for future use as a reception centre, library, museum, historical archive and botanical garden.

In 1930 groups of English people started arriving at the "Englishman's Castle", and estate belonging to George Langworth."The Englishman".  Torremolinos' favourite adoptive son, who that year converted his estate into the first place of residence for foreigners on the Costa del Sol.  But tourism took off at the start of the 50's with the building  of spacious high-class hotels.  In the 60's, Torremolinos was the heart of the Costa del Sol.

Communications and facilities
Today,  Torremolinos, besides having the greatest number of hotels on the Costa del Sol, offers magnificent road transport; Motorway which make it possible, for example to travel to Granada in under an hour and a half or to Seville in two hours. Rail travel is also easy, a local train linking Torremolinos with Malaga station every half hour.  The International Airport, with flights coming in from all over the world is only 4 kilometres away and the many bus routes facilitate problem free visitsto the rest of the province.  It must also be pointed out that Torremolinos offers all the necessary infrastructure of a congress centre.  The Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones (Congress and Exhibition Centre) which is the finest on the Costa del Sol and is constantly being modernized, is the ideal setting for all types of meetings, from the very small to huge events involving thousands of people, since it offers numerous rooms, technical crews and everything necessary to hold meetings and congresses.

Climate
Torremolinos' climate is exceptional all the year round, due largely to the Sierra de Mijas which protects the town against the cold northerly winds, creating a micro climate with an average temperature of 22 degrees centigrade and over 325 days of sunper year.  This means visitors can enjoy the beach and practice open-air sport at any time of the year; hiking; bowls; riding; swimming; water sports etc.  A few kilometres away there are several golf courses and a first class marina.

Gastronomy 
As for cuisine, there is great variety, from the most exotic dishes to the most typical "el pescaito frito" (small fried fish) which can be enjoyed along the whole of the coast of Torremolinos - nearly 7 kilometres of beaches packed with restaurants and beach bars.  "La Carihuela", the famous fishing area and the Bajondillo district being worthy of mention.  There are numerous discotheques, bars, flamenco halls, bowling alleys, etc. to liven up the visitors night.

Popular Fairs
With regard to local festivities, there is the romeria open-air party) of San Miguel - the town's patron saint.  This is considered to be one of the best in Andalusia, as well as the fair held in his hour.  Also, being a fishing village, La Virgen del Carmen is carried in a maritime romeria on 16 July.  Finally, in homage to its visitors, there are the "Dia del "Pescaito" in June and the "Dia del Turista" (Tourists Day) in September.
